Trustees with legal, fundraising expertise, co Secretary and/or located in Greece

  • Do you want to help child refugees access safe, legal routes to sanctuary?
  • Do you want to join a ground-breaking, determined and compassionate charity that is leading the fight for child refugees caught in limbo in Europe and elsewhere?

Who we are:

Safe Passage International (SPI) is a strategic organisation with a legal focus. We champion refugee rights to legal safe passage (protection and a dignified life) through strategic legal work, advocacy, capacity building and community organising.

Safe Passage started as a project of charity Citizens UK in response to the plight of child refugees in Calais. In the last three years we have developed into a multi award winning project with an annual spend of £1.2 million and approximately 22 staff active in 3 countries. More than 1,800 children have travelled through the safe and legal routes we have helped open through our ground-breaking cross-border approach.

In the last year SPI has registered as legal organisations in France and Greece, enabling our operations to grow from strength to strength.

What are we looking for?

We are now looking to appoint up to 3 new Trustees to help drive our continued success and provide strategic direction to our legal and advocacy work. We are looking for Trustees with experience and expertise at a strategic level in one or more of the following areas:

  •  Litigation and legal work, particularly in the areas of immigration or human rights law
  •  Greek charity/business sectors; we are looking for an individual based in or partially domiciled in Greece
  •  Lived experience of fleeing persecution and refugee protection
  •  Fundraising at national and international levels
  • Company Secretary experience
  • SPI is committed to building a board which is gender balanced, diverse, and international in composition.

What difference will you make?

Some 30,000 children risked their lives to reach Europe in 2018, almost 13,000 were unaccompanied. At a time when many national Governments across Europe are hardening their approach towards refugees and migrants, your work on the Board will help shape our three year strategy to ensure safe and legal routes to sanctuary exist for all people seeking asylum in Europe, especially children. We are also looking for Trustees with experience in fundraising who can help us develop our fundraising strategy and ensure SPI is in a sustainable position to continue this ground-breaking work.

What is required?

Trustees will meet quarterly with sub-committees meeting in the intervening period. Meetings will be predominantly held in London, but with video conferencing available for those not based in the UK.

Trustees are invited to serve a 3 year term and in addition to attending full board meetings, and the meetings of any sub-committees on which they choose to serve, are expected to visit at least one Safe Passage operational site per year, and directly contribute oversight to the work of the organisation in the area within which they specialise.

All trustees will be required to complete an induction and enhanced DBS check, and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed by the charity.

 How to apply

Applicants are invited to submit a CV and covering letter of no more than two pages to with the Email Subject Line: Trustee APPLICATION . Those invited to interview will have an opportunity to discuss the role with the SPI CEO before an interview with existing members of the Board.
