Our reaction to supreme court ruling on Rwanda plan

Today, the Supreme Court ruled against the UK Government on it’s cruel and ludicruous plan to banish people seeking asylum to Rwanda. This is excellent news - here is Safe Passage’s reaction:

Katie Morrison, CEO at Safe Passage: “This is a very welcome decision from the court today. We’re thinking of all the people and families in the UK who will be breathing a sigh of relief, after living in fear everyday of banishment to Rwanda.

“We’re sure this Government won’t give up on its unlawful, unworkable and expensive plan to punish refugees who cross the Channel, but today’s decision will make it that much harder. The tragic truth is that people will continue to make dangerous journeys across the Channel to reach safety and family here because no safe routes are available.

“Instead of playing politics with refugee lives, this Government needs to take a new compassionate approach that welcomes refugees and upholds the right to seek safety. This must start with opening safe routes, so refugees don’t have to risk their lives to reach protection.  It’s essential that refugees can access safe travel options to the UK, like a refugee visa, and get a fair hearing on their need for protection.”
