Responding to tragic loss of life in the Channel

On Saturday 12 August, six people from Afghanistan sadly lost their lives in their attempts to reach safety or family in the UK. Safe Passage is heartbroken that more precious lives have been lost.

Responding to the tragedy, Katie Morrison, CEO at Safe Passage, said: “It is truly devastating that more people have lost their lives whilst trying to find safety in the UK. Our thoughts are with everyone who was on that boat, and we send our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of those that died.

“This latest tragedy should never have happened. Instead of focussing on offering safer options for refugees, this Government has continued to parade cruel anti-refugee policies and stoke divisions. If this continues, we fear we’ll only see more tragic deaths. The Government must act now and open safe routes, so people can arrive here safely, without risking their lives at sea, to seek the protection they need and to reunite with family."
