More loss of life at sea in search of safety

Safe Passage are deeply saddened to hear that more people have lost their lives in sea crossings in attempts to reach protection. Our response:

Katie Morrison, CEO at Safe Passage: “We’re devastated at reports that more than sixty precious lives have been lost this week off the coast of Cape Verde. We’re thinking of everyone on that boat, and their loved ones who may not even know yet of their loss.

“This follows a shipwreck off the coast of Italy last week, and loss of life in the English Channel over the weekend. And these are only the tragedies that have been reported on in the news. Everyday, people are having to risk their lives to find safety, making desperate and dangerous journeys because there is no other way to reach protection.

“We need governments to show compassionate leadership and offer safe routes to protection in the UK and Europe for people fleeing conflict and persecution. Too many people are dying because of hostile policies.”
