Our Statement on the 39 people found dead in a lorry in Essex
The news today that 39 people including a child have been found dead in the back of a lorry is utterly devastating. Whatever the circumstances that led to their deaths, no one should feel they have no alternative but to get in the back of a lorry in order to reach the UK.
As a charity working with refugees across Europe in vulnerable situations we know that when safe and legal routes aren't available, people are more likely to attempt dangerous journeys, often risking exploitation and death in desperation to reach a safe place and family. The UK could be doing far more to guarantee safe, swift, legal passage to Britain for some of the most vulnerable refugees in Europe and we would urge the Government to reflect on how it can step up its efforts to provide legal alternatives to prevent any more children and adults dying in this tragic way."
