Yesterday's tragic news
Yesterday, someone lost their life crossing the Channel trying to reach sanctuary in the UK.
In response to the news, Gunes Kalkan, Head of Campaigns at Safe Passage International, said:
“We are deeply saddened by the news that someone has lost their life crossing the Channel, and our thoughts are with all those who knew and loved them.
This tragic death could have been prevented, if only the Government opened safe alternative routes for refugees. Nobody should be forced to risk their life to reach safety. Right now, however, people fleeing war and persecution are left with no choice but to risk the dangerous journey across the Channel in a dinghy to reach sanctuary in our communities.
It is disgraceful that this Government has presided over the closure of safe routes, and plans to make the situation worse still with their Nationality and Borders Bill. We urge the Government to act now to save lives by ditching their inhumane and unworkable Bill and opening safe routes to the UK for refugees.”
