Rwanda Plan: response to Home Affairs Committee Report
Safe Passage International responds to a report, published today (18th July 2022), from the Home Affairs Committee condemning the Rwanda offshoring plan. The Committee strongly reccommends the Government put in place safe routes instead of wasting time and money on unevidenced deterrents that don’t work.
Beth Gardiner-Smith, CEO of Safe Passage International: “The Government must urgently action the Committee’s strong recommendation to create safe routes for people to seek asylum in the UK, including ways for separated refugee families to reunite here. We’ve warned time and time again of the dangers of not having safe routes to the UK – loss of life and increasing channel crossings – but the Government has repeatedly ignored our warnings.
“This report demonstrates how ludicrous and immoral it is to play politics with people’s lives by dreaming up unevidenced deterrents, like banishing people to Rwanda or pushing back boats. The tragic reality of having no safe routes to the UK means people will continue to take dangerous journeys to seek safety and reunite with family.”
