A #MessageInABottle for refugees
Two years ago, on 24th November 2021, we witnessed the biggest loss of life in the Channel. An inflatable dinghy carrying the hopes and dreams of children, men and women in search of safety capsized, claiming the lives of 31 people.
We refuse to accept such tragedies as the status quo. At the heart of them lies the UK’s broken asylum system and senseless policies that persistently slam doors on refugees, only pushing people into the clutches of smugglers.
Today, we say: never again. Join us in sending a #MessageInABottle to those who undertook this perilous journey on November 24th and others treading the same path, desperately seeking safety. Let's send a resounding message of hope and solidarity, assuring refugees that we will stand up for them until not a single more life is lost. Learn more with this video from our Young Leaders:
Here’s how you can join in:
Think about a message you’d like to send to those who lost their lives, their loved ones and anyone else forced to make similarly dangerous journeys.
Write your message on a piece of paper, and tuck it into a glass bottle.
Share a picture of your bottle on social media, adding your message in the caption with the hashtag #MessageInABottle. Alternatively, film yourself reading it out loud. If you live near the sea, a lake or a waterway, use that as your backdrop.
Make sure to tag us so we can see your beautiful messages and share them far and wide.
Spread the word – tell your friends, colleagues and family!
Don’t have social media? Email us your picture along with your message at campaigns@safepassage.org.uk.
On this somber day, and as we remember the souls who were lost, let's be the light that pierces through the darkness, sending a powerful beacon of hope for refugees. Join the movement and help us ignite a wave of solidarity and humanity across the country over the next few days.
PS: We’re on a mission to ensure these tragedies become history, once and for all. We’re demanding Routes To Safety so that no one has to risk their lives just to be somewhere safe or reunite with their loved ones. Are you with us?
