Responding to the new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill
Responding to the new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill announced by the Government in Parliament today, Dr Wanda Wyporska, Chief Executive at Safe Passage International said:
“It is worrying there is no mention of how the UK will provide protection to people fleeing war and persecution in an asylum and immigration Bill.
“It’s unacceptable that the focus is clearly still on cracking down on smugglers with increasing enforcement measures, that could see refugees punished in the process. The Government will fail to prevent more deaths in the Channel and people taking dangerous journeys without opening safe routes.
“Whilst there are some welcome measures, such as the repealing of the Rwanda Act, this isn’t the overall approach we want to see. This Government must urgently open safe routes and fix the broken family reunion rules.”
