Safe Passage responds to Suella Braverman's statement on refugee protection

Responding to the UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s speech on the Refugee Convention, Katie Morrison, CEO at Safe Passage, said:

“In the wake of the Holocaust, we made an international promise to ‘never again’ deny persecuted men, women and children refuge. Suella Braverman is wrong to say that this promise is outdated. Faced with the challenges of today and tomorrow, the international commitment to protect refugees has never been more needed.

This Government must not slam the door shut on those seeking safety in the UK. Denying refugees sanctuary will not stop children and their families from having to flee their home, but it will push them into harm, hardship and the hands of smugglers. Instead of playing politics with people’s lives, the Home Secretary would do better focusing on fixing the asylum system, opening safe routes for refugees and cooperating with the international community on refugee protection.”
