TEKLE & DAWIT'S STORY

Tekle, an Eritrean refugee, made contact with Safe Passage to try and get his younger brother Dawit to safety.

Just 14 years old, Dawit had made the long and dangerous journey from Eritrea to Italy and then on to Calais alone. Even once we had located him in Calais, there were still delays in getting his case processed. Tekle decided to become involved in Safe Passage’s campaigns work to raise awareness of Dawit’s case and to advocate for other child refugees. We took a group of MPs to Calais along with Tekle to meet Dawit and highlight the need to improve family reunion procedures and reduce delays. Following a letter to Theresa May from Dawit, he was finally reunited with Tekle, after eight months of waiting in Calais and nearly two years apart.

Dawit is now living with Tekle in Harrow and they are so happy to finally be together. We have continued to work with both the brothers to help them to access the support they need to settle into their lives together.
