Exciting update: new Trustees appointed

As we celebrate Trustee Week, Safe Passage international is delighted to announce the appointment of four new Trustees to our Board: Atiqullah Sayed, Caroline Doan, Clare Tudor and Jack Steadman.

Atiq, Caroline, Clare and Jack were appointed by the Board with expert input of Safe Passage Young Leaders.

Atiqullah Sayed brings huge experience working with unaccompanied children and refugees in the UK and internationally and holds a master’s degree in human rights. He has specialised in support for unaccompanied children and refugees with local authorities across the UK as a social work manager and practitioner. Prior to this he served as civil affairs officer, internally displaced persons and minorities’ rights officer with the United Nations, and has worked for international NGOs including the International Committee of the Red Cross. Atiq is bringing lived experience to the Board as a refugee from Afghanistan.

Caroline Doan brings finance and operational experience from a range of senior roles within the international NGO sector, most recently as Head of Finance & Services at Médecins Sans Frontières UK. After training with PricewaterhouseCoopers, she has worked for organisations such as Concern Worldwide, Save the Children UK and International Alert working in countries such as Haiti, Lebanon and across West & Central Africa. The mission at the heart of Safe Passage International is one that is very personal to Caroline as her parents were themselves refugees: “they were ‘Vietnamese boat people’ in the late seventies fleeing persecution in Vietnam after the imprisonment of family members in concentration camps. Unlike so many, they had the fortune to have been rescued from their sinking boat by a British submarine, and subsequently offered asylum in the UK.”

Clare Tudor is currently the Director and lead lecturer for the Helena Kennedy Centre’s Refugee Rights Hub at Sheffield Hallam University, having co-designed and co-developed the Hub. Clare has over 20 years of experience delivering frontline services in England and Scotland in the asylum and immigration field, including as an immigration and asylum caseworker and policy expert. She has played a leading role in establishing the Scottish Government Guardianship service and has trained police, foster carers and social workers in supporting asylum seeking children, including those who have experienced trafficking. Clare brings with her strong safeguarding expertise.

Jack Steadman brings impressive campaigns and strategic communications skills to our Board. He is currently Head of Digital & Campaigns at UK charity Freedom From Torture, having joined from Choose Love, a greatly valued supporter of Safe Passage International. At Choose Love, Jack was a founding volunteer in Calais and Head of Digital, leading on the digital delivery of the ‘Choose Love’ online store. Jack currently advises a number of international charities in their campaign strategies and coaches teams from around the world, and is joining Purpose as Campaigns Director in January.

We’re looking forward to working with Atiq, Caroline, Clare and Jack, and grateful for the passion and expertise they will bring to our organisation. And we thank all our Trustees for their huge contribution to the work of Safe Passage International.
