Responding to the death of a child trying to reach the UK
In response to the tragic incident where a 7-year-old girl lost her life after a dinghy capsized near Dunkirk, North of France, Safe Passage’s CEO, Beth Gardiner-Smith, stated:
“We’re at a loss for words. This little girl boarded the boat with her family, hoping to find safety and rebuild their lives. It’s unimaginable what desperation led them to such a dangerous journey. Our hearts go out to her family and everyone else affected. These tragedies should never be allowed to happen, let alone become the norm.
Tragically, this news comes just days after another fatal crossing claimed 3 lives. It’s an awful reminder that refugees, including children, will continue to pay the highest price for this Government's hostile policies, unless urgent action is taken.
Opening new safe routes is the only way to prevent further heartbreaking loss. Instead of ramping up anti-refugee measures, the Government must act urgently to save lives and end these deadly journeys.”
